Bell Labs researchers demo mode multiplexing – a way to transmit many data channels over different spatial shapes called “modes” that should dramatically increase the capacity of a single fiber in order to keep sustaining the endless growth of internet traffic demand. Together with their partners Bell Labs researchers have created a complete and operational setup showing the possibility to transport up to 5 data channels at 100Gbps on different modes at the same wavelength over a prototype few-mode fiber.
