An HLN helps customers boost revenues by delivering new services, managing network capacity, and reducing costs. It also can greatly accelerate the monetization of a customer's network.
The HLN process begins with a consultative engagement. At that time the customer's business model, including cost modeling and customer-focused strategic planning, is reviewed. The next critical first step is to align a customer's technology programs with its strategic vision. Decision-makers within the customer's organization must clearly articulate the business future they want to realize — and identify how an HLN can support those objectives. Both marketing and technical concerns should be taken into consideration when making this evaluation.

Given the complexity of developing a strategic plan, robust toolsets that offer mathematical and technical concerns should be pressed into service. All assumptions should be analyzed. The discovery process often reveals new and meaningful perspectives on the network and throws evolution challenges into sharp relief. Costs must be weighed pragmatically against value, and both must be clearly defined. For instance, which costs are truly associated with transformation and which with other business or operational activities? Further, how is the value of different costs to be determined?
Once the vision and strategy have been defined the transformation can begin.
