Multivendor Network Migration

Accelerate your transformation with an effective network-migration program

Service providers face a challenge to lower costs by moving subscribers to new-generation IP voice and data networks in a streamlined and cost-effective manner. Network migration is the process of moving all customers from legacy networks to new networks that are typically based on IP technologies such as IP Multimedia Subsystems (IMS), Multi-Protocol Label Switching (MPLS), optical and Long Term Evolution (LTE).

To be successful, a formal migration program is necessary to prepare, build the capabilities and execute a cost-efficient change. A proven framework that addresses the full scope of a migration program, coupled with a suite of proven tools and specialized teams, accelerates the migration while removing the risk and cost associated with moving your network to new technologies.

One objective is to execute quickly, reducing subscriber-migration outage time significantly compared to more ad-hoc means. Another is to increase the migration’s reliability so that customers experience a smooth change to the new platforms.

The end goal is to transform the network to all-IP, allowing providers to focus on creating rich multimedia consumer and business services that create new revenue streams while lowering operating costs.

Two types of migrations are voice and data:

  • Voice-subscriber migration is the physical movement of voice users from existing platforms, such as Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN)/TDM and softswitches, to a new voice platform, such as IMS or multiservice access node (MSAN). In addition user data, such as calling plans, billing, emergency data and location, are migrated.

Providers must find innovative methods and tools to automate the customer-records movement, speeding up migration and reducing errors, or be saddled with the costs of running dual networks, dealing with customer complaints and not leveraging new services.

Tools used include line-identification modules to replace labor-intensive cleansing of outside-plant records; automatic-configuration software to extract, transform and provision subscriber data; and schedule management tools that eliminate many costly, last-minute manual activities.
  • Data-services migration is the wide-scale physical movement of data circuits to a new platform, such as converting ATM, Frame Relay or private line to IP including IPv6. Alcatel-Lucent offers methods and tools to automate the movement of circuits.

For large internal or corporate customers, program management is fundamental to data migration. We help to provide consistency and reliability to these moves includes migration scheduling for timed projects with given dependencies and constraints, and migration workflow management for dealing with events required to complete a migration

Using automated tools for creating IP configurations and transferring user data, as well as using dedicated resources, possibly in an operations-center-like capacity, improves reliability.

Data and voice network-migration management is a critical step in an overall transformation journey. The journey is part of an effort to turn your infrastructure into an Alcatel-Lucent High Leverage Network™ (HLN) that can help transform your organization and reduce the cost of providing new applications to subscribers.

Alcatel-Lucent has experts at regional service-delivery centers and a dedicated Migration Operations Center to help you in this effort. In addition, patent tools, a framework and processes contribute speed and reliability to the execution of voice- and data-migration programs.

Our value is to manage:

  • Complexity, such as thousands of network elements, hundreds of thousands of subscribers, millions of parameters and data records
  • Costs, including fixed cost per subscriber
  • Risk, with 99 percent accuracy and migration of interdependent work streams time reduced to few seconds,

Partner with Alcatel-Lucent to de-risk and streamline your migration efforts.
