I had the pleasure to be on a mission at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting of the New Champions held in Dalian, China, and to take part in one of the foremost global business gatherings in Asia. There are a few takeaways I would like to share with you. The WEF is a platform which brings together unique multi-stakeholder audience of global decision-makers, thought leaders and representatives of the large companies to discuss the most pressing issues facing the world. The discussions have covered from health, environment, and to the new phase of development where ICT is providing the key basic infrastructures for all vital social and economic processes and innovations.

As our so called “developed world” undergoes a major crisis and greatly suffers from a lack of leadership and certainties, a genuine enthusiasm can be felt in Asia and a strong belief that a new growth is possible. However it will not happen by mimicking the old patterns of the west but through innovations. And these innovations will take place on various technical and social imperatives to further enhance the world’s economic, environmental and social development.

Christine Diamente in Dalian, China

By Christine Diamente, Head of Corporate Responsibility, Alcatel-Lucent

I have had the exceptional opportunity of attending the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos for several years now.   And beyond the awe of being in a unique environment with the world’s top leaders, this last meeting in Dalian, China on Sept 14-16th more than any other, stood out in my mind.

Many of us arrived in Dalian wondering, “what does the conference theme Mastering Quality Growth really mean”?

After intense days of discussions with Young Global Leaders, Young Scientists, Tech Pioneers, Public, Private and Civil Society Leaders–  the answer to me was clear.  “Mastering Quality Growth” is about a collective, global responsibility, to make our world better.  This means a world that is more inclusive, with sustainable growth and that puts humans at the centre.

Yesterday has been a great opening day of the Summer Davos! All of my discussions have focused on the theme of innovation and how it relates to the main theme “Mastering Quality Growth”.

I really believe that quality growth means innovative growth from a social and human perspective.  We should use technology to improve our lives. It must be smart and sustainable.

I look with excitement how China is mastering  innovation and particularly the leap to disruptive innovation.  It is a recognition that the market is changing rapidly. And China is responding with a pace of disruptive innovation. Read More…

Christel Heydemann at WEF's "Summer Davos" in Dalian, China

Christel Heydemann at WEF's "Summer Davos" in Dalian, China

By Christel Heydemann, VP Corporate Human Resources & Transformation, Alcatel-Lucent

Over the last 2 days, the World Economic Forum has invited me as a guest to their Young Global Leaders (YGL) Summit here in Dalian, China. I feel extremely lucky to have been invited to join such an extraordinary group of young, successful and dynamic leaders from all diverse geographies and backgrounds: public, private, NGOs.
The main theme we have been debating is “what are the new values for today’s global reality?”. What needs to be different and what are our values as leaders? Here are some thoughts we shared.
First of all, all of the YGLs felt values were critical and agreed that in today’s world, to be a leader, you need to have the willingness to serve others. Creating business value is not anymore about generating money and return on investment, but it is about creating value for others and giving back. We discussed how leaders are also humans and to run a healthy organization, there is a parallel between leadership and personal health.
Secondly, most change happens at a moment of crisis. And in today’s geopolitical situation, change is happening across the world, country by country, region by region. We must seize the change to shape new leadership. There was a unanimous feeling across us that through a new leadership value system, we can shape change in each of our own domains, respectively.
