Last week was a great one for our lightRadio portfolio. We performed the first three-person live transatlantic video call in front of an audience of leading industry executives, technology leaders and analysts. And a little later that same day in London Bell Labs received a Global Telecoms Business Editor’s award for Corporate Contribution to Telecoms Innovations, for developing the lightRadio technology.

On June 7th, in Miami, in front of an audience of our industry partners, I connected an Internet tablet to a video call, hosted by IDC Industry Analyst Chris Lewis in Murray Hill which was already connected by video to Ben Verwaayen in Paris. This call was made possible by using our lightRadio technology. To add even more gravitas to the event, Chris was sat beside the desk used by Alexander Graham Bell when he made the first long-distance telephone call.

During the call, Ben, Chris and I discussed how user demand is changing the way we see mobile broadband networks. Demand is accelerating for high-bandwidth applications, predominantly video, and fuelled by the increased adoption of smartphones and social networking sites. We have to meet that demand for bandwidth with an efficient, cost-effective solution.  That solution is lightRadio.

To echo Ben’s words – last week we took one huge step toward commercial reality for lightRadio.  And as we continue to work together with industry partners, we are taking bigger and bigger steps each day towards that reality.
