Alcatel-Lucent gets (open) plugged in

"We are creating an environment where developers can get their applications in front of literally billions of potential end-users no matter where they are in the world, and OpenPlug absolutely shares that vision and has made great strides toward making that a reality. That’s the true value of 'open'." -- Laura Merling, Vice President, Open API Platform and Services
Early this morning we announced the acquisition of OpenPlug, a leading player in the mobile and broadband app development market (like us, they are also based in France). The acquisition extends our penetration and offerings across the application developer ecosystem.
This is the second acquisition we’ve made in this space over the past couple of months, building on our June acquisition of ProgrammableWeb, the industry’s go-to source for API-related content. To those watching our developer platform and service strategy evolve, there is no mistaking how serious we are about playing a leading role in the future of application enablement.
Being a leader means understanding what customers and the larger community around them needs. We know, for example, that while devices and applications have become more intuitive for end users, the underlying software has grown more complex. Multiple operating systems are a challenge for service providers and developers when broadly deploying applications across fragmented mobile platforms (something the industry calls “fragmentation”). This limited application reach negatively affects the number of applications service providers can offer through apps stores, as well as an application’s marketability, adoption and revenue generation for service providers and developers. It also negatively affects mobile devices, which are not as desired if they can’t deliver the latest and greatest applications. Enter OpenPlug.
OpenPlug’s mobile software solves this problem by converting application code into software that runs on any leading mobile device operating system. OpenPlug’s developer tools — which we will integrate into our developer platform, as well as continue to offer on a standalone basis – make it easier for service providers and developers to quickly create and offer apps that run on the broadest possible variety of mobile devices, from high-end smartphones to more widespread mass market phones. Service providers can now equip enterprises and developers to build applications across a wide range of devices, better serving their customer base. With our help, OpenPlug will be able to offer a wider range of platforms to serve not only smartphones, but also mass market devices, IPTV, and other platforms such as the connected car.
OpenPlug carved a position for itself as an influential player in a space that is very complementary to our application enablement vision. Acquiring OpenPlug entrenches Alcatel-Lucent deeper into the larger application ecosystem so we can help build a stronger bridge to connect the worlds of telco and web apps. By putting the strength of Alcatel-Lucent behind the OpenPlug toolset, we make it part of a much larger ecosystem.
