Video: A tour of the Bell Labs

In this edition of our Innovation at Work video series, we’re looking at that bubbling cauldron of ideas which is the Bell Labs. As Alcatel-Lucent’s research arm with branches in India, China and Europe, Bell Labs attracts some of the brightest scientific talent from all over the world. They come here to exercise their passion for top-level technological research and to see the fruit of that work carried through into real-life products. Bell Labs research led to inventions such as the laser and the transistor, and recently DWDM and MIMO, which are essential in today’s networking technologies.

Recently, an article from Business Week asked “Where have you gone, Bell Labs?” (you can read the response from Bell Labs President Jeong Kim to Business Week here)… Well, you can find out for yourself in this video and catch a glimpse of the future of communications and information technologies.

I have been very much interested in knowing more about Bell labs and one day InshaAllah I shall work here :) the video above is grt as it describes the true purpose ov bell labs…though it lacks more visuals.

  2. Mustafa Daif says:

If you make another video about the great contributions of Bell Labs to
    science e.g. invention of transistor

  3. Boris Lubachevsky says:

I am hard-of-hearing like about 3% of general
population and about 20% of my age group.
Although I can read lips somewhat, the
throughput of your message to me would be greatly
increased if in addition to the hand waving
you would provide a caption service for the
transcript of your video. How about that
    for a communication innovation?

    • @Stéphane says:

Boris – you are right. We have indeed versions of some of our videos which include subtitles, so we’ll make sure to publish them as well. In the meantime, I will add a link to the transcript as a PDF file.

      Best regards

    >> One aspect of the Bell labs philosophy is the notion of personal contact. Breakthrough ideas can
come unpredictably, from a stroll down the corridor or a lunchtime chat with a colleague
working on a completely different project

Yes – I can absolutely relate, remembering the Bagel Brunches we used to have at the Murray Hill Labs during the early 90′s. I’ve brought this idea to companies I’ve worked for in the financial sector, and it has been surprisingly (to management) fruitful.

  5. Stephanie Sayers says:

My father devoted his career (40 years) to research at BTL, the majority of that time (~26 yrs)at the Murray Hill site. It is gratifying to see invention and innovation still fluorish at Bell Labs.

  6. John says:

Is Bell Labs still active in materials science and condensed matter physics?
